4,000 Farmers in Diyala Gain Access to 25,000 Seedlings Annually

Baqubah, Diyala – September 23, 2024 – A major step forward for Diyala’s agricultural sector was achieved with the official reopening of the newly rehabilitated nursery in Baqubah. This initiative, part of a collaboration between the Government of Japan and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), provides more than 4,000 local farmers with access to over 25,000 seedlings per year, supported by cutting-edge irrigation systems and solar energy solutions.

The nursery, which is part of the Diyala Agriculture Department, has undergone substantial upgrades, including the installation of advanced irrigation technologies, the expansion of greenhouse facilities, and the provision of a wider variety of seeds and agricultural supplies. These improvements have not only increased seedling production but also boosted the nursery’s overall income, enabling further investment in its long-term growth and sustainability.

Producing a wide variety of fruit-bearing trees, such as citrus, apple, pomegranate, and fig, along with ornamental and shade trees, the nursery plays an essential role in supporting the local agricultural community. Prior to the UNDP’s involvement, the nursery’s annual output ranged between 10,000 and 15,000 seedlings. With the latest enhancements, production has surged to 25,000 seedlings annually.

The nursery rehabilitation project is a key investment in Iraq’s liberated areas, with significant benefits for farmers, who can now access seedlings at prices lower than the market rate. Additionally, they are provided with training in modern irrigation techniques and the use of solar energy on their farms. This knowledge transfer is expected to boost sustainable farming practices and enhance agricultural productivity across the region.

This initiative is part of an integrated approach by the UNDP to create sustainable livelihoods and employment by revitalising infrastructure in key industrial and productive sectors. The project supports Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 8 and 13, promoting decent work and climate action.

Implemented in partnership with the non-profit organisation, Welthungerhilfe, and with generous financial backing from the Government of Japan, this project underscores the importance of international collaboration in Iraq’s journey toward long-term stability and prosperity.

UNDP Resident Representative in Iraq, Mr. Auke Lootsma, commented: “The reopening of this nursery, equipped with state-of-the-art systems, marks an important milestone in Diyala’s journey toward rebuilding and recovering from years of instability. Finding local, climate-smart, and sustainable solutions for projects like these is essential for creating a secure and dignified environment for families returning to Diyala.”

He added: “We are here today thanks to the generous support from one of our founding partners, the Government of Japan. Together with the German Society for Combating Hunger, we have made significant strides toward achieving stability in Iraq. I would also like to acknowledge the strong partnership between UNDP and both the Iraqi and local governments, which is crucial for the successful implementation and sustainability of such projects.”

The Japanese Ambassador shared his thoughts on the project’s completion, stating: “Japan has been standing by all the people of Iraq in times of difficulties. Our support to realise agricultural sustainability in Iraq, including the introduction of Japanese wisdom and high technology on efficient water use, demonstrates our goodwill towards Iraqi people. Today I am very delighted to commemorate the formal opening of Baqubah Nursery in Diyala, wishing for long-term sustainable development in Diyala and all over Iraq.”
