Iraq has taken a significant step toward creating more inclusive work spaces. The newly launched Iraqi National Network for Employers Interested in Empowering and Employing Persons with Disabilities is supported by the backing of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani.
This initiative was established by the Iraqi Federation of Industries (IFI) in collaboration with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and supported by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS).
The network aims to encourage inclusive workplaces by offering training, technical guidance, and opportunities for employers to share better practices. Through its affiliation with the ILO’s “Global Business and Disability Network”, Iraqi companies gain access to international tools and resources for promoting diversity.
Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, Ahmed Al-Asadi, noted that the government is prioritising inclusion through partnerships with the private sector to create job opportunities and drive inclusive development. The initiative is a key step in integrating persons with disabilities into the workforce.
Dr. Maha Kattaa, ILO Country Coordinator in Iraq, noted that the network empowers individuals with disabilities not only to secure employment but also to contribute actively to the economy as entrepreneurs.
Prime Minister’s Advisor for Youth Affairs, Qasim Al-Zalmi, underscored the collaboration between public and private sectors in advancing employment for persons with disabilities. The government has pledged ongoing support to ensure inclusive access to the labor market, particularly for youth with disabilities.
Mr. Pierluigi Candier of AICS spoke on the initiative’s alignment with AICS vision for economic growth rooted in inclusivity and sustainability. The network’s efforts are part of the ILO’s project, “Towards More and Better Employment,” focusing on private-sector support in southern Iraq.
The network not only supports businesses, but also advocates for policies incentivising inclusive employment practices. It serves as a bridge between employers, the public and the government to reshape Iraq’s labour market for greater accessibility and diversity.
This initiative represents a monumental step forward in Iraq’s journey toward building an inclusive and fair future, where all citizens can thrive.
