Arab Document Day Celebrates National Identity and Heritage Preservation

On 28 October 2024, coinciding with Arab Document Day, His Excellency the Minister of Culture, Tourism and Antiquities, Professor Dr. Ahmad Fakkak Al-Badrani, inaugurated the conference titled “The Document is National Identity.” The event also featured a special exhibition of historical manuscripts, organised by the House of Books and Documents. Notable attendees included Prime Minister Advisor Dr. Hassan Al-Maan, Barq Raad Allawi, Acting Director General of the House of Books and Documents, and several prominent figures from scientific, academic, and cultural circles.

In his opening address, Minister Al-Badrani underscored the vital role of documentation, stating, “A nation that preserves and documents its heritage is a nation present throughout the ages.” He emphasised the importance of historical documents as symbols of national identity and sovereignty, urging governmental action to retrieve Ottoman-era documents currently held in Turkey.

The Minister praised the House of Books and Documents for its dedication to preserving Iraq’s knowledge heritage. During the conference, the Director General of the House provided insights into the evolution of scientific documentation since its establishment in 1963. He highlighted the upcoming completion of a digital library project, anticipated to mark a significant advancement in the archiving and digitisation of manuscripts and documents.

A documentary film showcasing the history of the House of Books and Documents, including the establishment of its departments and recent developments, was screened to attendees. Additionally, certificates of appreciation were presented to individuals who contributed to the success of the conference, recognising their efforts in promoting the preservation of Iraq’s rich cultural heritage.
