Asian Delegation Explores China’s Infrastructure Projects in Iraq

As part of the Belt and Road Initiative, the Asian delegation visited the offices of China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), gaining first hand insights into the successful delivery of their projects.

During the visit, delegates learned about key undertakings such as the Chengdu Metro Line and the Gaobeiba Vehicle Depot. This was followed by a Q&A session where Asian media representatives engaged with CCCC officials regarding their international ventures.

The delegation was also introduced to the Iraq Mosul Bridge project, a significant milestone as it marks China’s first large-scale bridge project contracted overseas. Additionally, CCCC showcased their engineering expertise in Iraq’s port infrastructure through the Khor al-Zubair dredging project. This endeavour includes the construction of an immersed tunnel, connecting the Faw Grand Port to the Umm Qasr Port, Iraq’s first underwater tunnel. This strategic project is set to enhance Iraq’s port infrastructure and play a key role in the region’s economic recovery.

Mr. Zha Chang Miao, Executive Director of CCCC’s Brand and Culture Department, responded to our questions regarding the company’s future projects in Iraq, sharing details about an upcoming cement kiln plant in Erbil.

The project entails the construction of a rotary kiln cement plant with a daily production capacity of 6,000 tons, located in the suburbs of Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Autonomous Region in northern Iraq. The initiative also includes the development of a 40-megawatt heavy oil power plant and a 10-kilometer connecting road. The entire project is slated for completion within 2.5 years and will be financed through export credit arrangements.

Currently, CCCC has signed a framework agreement with STER Group and received investment approval. Preliminary research and environmental assessments have been completed, and the financing process is progressing steadily.
