BAE Systems to Support Iraq’s Security Modernisation

Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani met yesterday in London with a high-level delegation from BAE Systems, led by the company’s CEO, Charles Woodburn. The meeting, held at the Prime Minister’s residence, highlighted Iraq’s growing focus on modernising its defence capabilities and enhancing cybersecurity infrastructure.

The discussions focused on BAE Systems’ proficiency in advanced weapons production and cybersecurity solutions. The Prime Minister reaffirmed his government’s dedication to modernising Iraq’s security forces with cutting-edge weaponry procured from top global suppliers.

In a key development, BAE Systems presented a proposal to collaborate with Iraq’s Defence Industries Commission to establish weapons production lines within the country. The company also offered to provide cybersecurity services tailored to Iraq’s evolving security needs. Prime Minister Al-Sudani welcomed the initiative, noting that Iraq’s Defence Industries Commission is structured to foster partnerships with specialised foreign companies, promoting the transfer of technology and expertise.

A spokesperson for BAE Systems, in a statement shared with IINA, commented on the potential partnership: “As a leading provider of defence and security capabilities to the UK government and given our long-standing presence in the Middle East, we’re well placed to support the UK and Iraq as they further define their shared defence and security priorities.”

The meeting reflects Iraq’s ambition to enhance its defence and security sectors through international cooperation, while strengthening its local production capacity and technological expertise.
