Baghdad Seminar Raises Awareness on Plastic Hazards

A cultural and educational seminar held recently in Baghdad brought together environmental experts, intellectuals, and activists to raise awareness about the growing environmental threat posed by plastic consumption. Titled “Reducing Plastic Consumption: An Individual and Community Responsibility,” the event aimed to encourage public discourse on sustainable living and personal accountability in environmental preservation.

Organised at the headquarters of the General Directorate of Cultural Affairs and held in collaboration with the Shabad Cultural Team, the seminar was supervised and attended by the Director General, Dr. Aref Al-Saadi. The programme opened with an overview of the prevalence of plastics in everyday life, setting the stage for a deeper exploration of their environmental toll.

Environmental consultant Dr. Amani Ibrahim delivered the keynote lecture, sharing a series of powerful documentary segments that highlighted the dangers of plastic waste, particularly single-use plastics. Her presentation examined the long-term impacts of plastic pollution on ecosystems and human health, including emerging research linking certain plastic compounds to cancer.

Dr. Ibrahim concluded with a forward-looking discussion on alternatives, encouraging the adoption of biodegradable materials and more environmentally conscious consumer habits. She emphasised that meaningful change begins with individuals, but must be supported by collective community action.

The seminar is part of a broader cultural effort to promote ecological responsibility and inspire sustainable practices within Iraqi society.
