Baghdad’s River Taxi Initiative Aims to Reduce Traffic Jams

The Iraqi Ministry of Transport is reviving its river taxi boat project, designed to offer an alternative mode of transport for citizens navigating Baghdad. This initiative aims to improve the persistent issue of traffic congestion by providing a sustainable alternative to road transport.

In response to increasing traffic problems in Baghdad, the project will start with river taxi services running between Kadhimiya and the University of Baghdad. These boats will make stops at various points along their route, allowing passengers to embark or disembark at different locations as needed. The Iraqi Ministry of Transport has invested in modern boats, available in sizes ranging from 20 to 40 seats, ensuring that the service is both accessible and cost-effective for daily commuters.

In addition to addressing transportation challenges, the river taxis offer a unique advantage: passengers can enjoy scenic views of the Tigris River and potentially arrive 30 minutes earlier than by car. This enhances the overall travel experience while contributing to more timely arrivals at work or university.

The project is set to launch in September, marking the beginning of a new chapter in Baghdad’s efforts to improve urban mobility and reduce traffic congestion.
