In line with the directives of the Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr. Ahmed Al-Mubarak, efforts to update and modernise Basra’s Sports City facilities have begun with the installation of a new athletics track at Basra International Stadium.
The Director of Basra Sports City, Mr. Lotfi Al-Jazaery, confirmed that the staff from Al-Hilal Technical Company started work on the track by removing the existing natural grass and preparing the site for the installation of a tartan surface, following internationally approved specifications. The project is expected to take approximately two months to complete, thanks to a clear and fixed work schedule made possible by the break in national team matches.
Al-Jazaery further stated that the track’s installation is part of an overall effort to bring the stadium to the highest standard of preparation for upcoming international events. Two major athletics championships are scheduled for February and March, and the stadium will be fully equipped in time for these events, as well as for the match between Iraq’s national football team and Kuwait on March 20, 2025.
This project highlights Iraq’s commitment to enhancing sports infrastructure and positioning Basra as a key venue for international athletics competitions.
