Celebrating Iraq's Christian Heritage

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani marked Christmas Eve by joining Iraq’s Christian community at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Karrada, Baghdad. The event, held in the heart of the capital, celebrated unity and showcased Iraq’s religious diversity.

During the Mass, Al-Sudani addressed the Christian community in Iraq, by extending heartfelt blessings to Christians in Iraq and around the world, wishing them a joyful and peaceful Christmas season. Reflecting on the teachings of Jesus Christ, the Prime Minister emphasised the importance of creating an environment with the values of compassion and forgiveness.

Iraq has notable historic significance as a center of Christianity in the Middle East. The Prime Minister highlighted the vital contributions of Christians throughout history, such as their role in the development of Mesopotamian civilisation and their loyalty and service to the nation.

He also acknowledged Iraq’s unique diversity, describing the nation as a mosaic of religious and ethnic communities that have coexisted in harmony for centuries. 

The Christmas Eve celebration symbolised a moment of solidarity, reinforcing Iraq’s commitment to embracing its diverse cultural and spiritual traditions.
