CMC Discusses Enhanced Cooperation with U.S. Chamber of Commerce

The Head of the Communication and Media Commission (CMC), Dr Ali Al-Muayyed, held discussions with Mr Steve Lutes, Chairman of the U.S.-Iraq Business Council and Vice President of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, at the authority’s headquarters in Baghdad. The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation and advancing regulatory frameworks to support economic and technological development.

The discussions highlighted Iraq’s ongoing transformation, including a surge in urban development and significant improvements in infrastructure. Dr Al-Muayyed outlined Iraq’s evolving media landscape, which has become a leading model in the region, noting the substantial growth of media institutions since 2003.

Both parties acknowledged the critical role of the telecommunications and technology sectors in boosting Iraq’s economy, as they represent the country’s second-largest source of revenue after oil. They also addressed the substantial increase in the authority’s revenue, which has tripled over the past two years.

The meeting underscored the importance of increasing the presence of leading U.S. technology firms in Iraq, recognising their potential to drive economic growth, facilitate the transfer of advanced technologies, and modernise Iraq’s digital infrastructure.

Furthermore, the two sides discussed strategies to support private sector investment in Iraq and facilitate its expansion into the U.S. market. Such initiatives are expected to foster stronger economic and technological ties between the two nations.

As Iraq experiences rapid advancements in digitalisation and telecommunications, cooperation with international partners remains a priority.
