The Fifth Baghdad International Theatre Festival concluded its programme of performances on Monday, bringing the curtains down on a vibrant celebration of the arts held from 10 to 18 December. The festival was dedicated to the late artist Dr Shafiq Al-Mahdi, honouring his significant contributions to Iraqi theatre and culture. The festival’s final day featured two distinct theatrical productions that captivated audiences with their thought-provoking narratives.
On the stage of Al-Rasheed Theatre, the Iraqi play Where Are We Going? (outside the competition) was performed, directed by Haider Manathar. The play follows the journey of a citizen in search of a homeland within his homeland, depicted through the interactions of three passengers in a car. Despite their differing paths, the passengers share a common quest for truth. The play takes an intriguing turn when the driver becomes drowsy and, to stay awake, asks the passengers to recount their personal stories in an engaging and entertaining manner.
Meanwhile, Al-Mansour Theatre hosted the national competition entry Azrael. Written by Mithal Ghazi and directed by Osama Al-Sultan, the play explores themes of life, death, and the eternal struggle between the Angel of Death and the values of life. Through a theatrical dialogue and debate, the production ultimately celebrates the triumph of life’s values, leaving audiences with a profound message of hope and resilience.
The Fifth Baghdad International Theatre Festival has once again showcased the rich tapestry of Iraqi theatre, highlighting the talents of local and international artists while fostering cultural exchange and dialogue. The event’s success reaffirms Baghdad’s enduring role as a centre for artistic expression and creativity in the region.
