G77 Presidency: Iraq’s Vision For Global Progress In 2025

On Monday, 13th January 2025, Iraq’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Fuad Hussein, addressed the United Nations to mark Iraq’s assumption of the presidency of the Group of 77 and China for the year 2025. Delivering Iraq’s inaugural speech, Mr. Hussein expressed deep gratitude for the honour and responsibility bestowed upon Iraq. 

“It is a great honour for Iraq and for me personally to bear this great responsibility by assuming the presidency of the group. We realise the importance of this role and the great responsibility placed on our shoulders, and we will work through our presidency to achieve our common goals and priorities,” Mr. Hussein stated.

The Foreign Minister outlined Iraq’s determination to strengthen solidarity among member states and pursue shared objectives, including achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), addressing climate change, promoting South-South cooperation, and safeguarding the interests of developing nations.

During its presidency, Iraq aims to prioritise sustainable development by tackling critical issues such as poverty alleviation, access to quality education and healthcare, and fostering international cooperation. Mr. Hussein emphasised Iraq’s commitment to supporting global climate initiatives and securing necessary financing for developing countries to address environmental challenges.

The Minister stressed the significance of resource-sharing and expertise exchange among member states to ensure inclusive and sustainable progress. Additionally, he highlighted the urgency of resolving economic challenges, including addressing debt crises, enhancing food security, and reforming the governance of international financial institutions.

Addressing the digital divide, the Minister highlighted the need to enhance the digital economy and empower marginalised groups, particularly women and youth. He stressed that improving education and vocational training opportunities would serve as a catalyst for human development and economic transformation.

Concluding his address, Mr. Hussein reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to collaborating with member states to realise the aspirations of the world’s peoples for peace, development, and prosperity. He emphasised Iraq’s resolve to use its presidency to champion the principles of unity, mutual respect, and progress that underpin the Group of 77 and China.
