Global Hunger Index Ranking Highlights Growing Concern

In the recently released Global Hunger Index for 2024, Iraq has been ranked 70th out of 127 countries, with a hunger score of 14.9. This represents a concerning increase of 1.1 points from the previous year, when Iraq’s score was recorded at 13.8.

A rising hunger score indicates a deterioration in the food security situation, signalling an urgent need for comprehensive strategies to address the escalating levels of hunger within the country. The increased index points reflect ongoing challenges that may include economic instability, insufficient agricultural productivity, and the impact of conflict and displacement.

As Iraq grapples with these issues, it is essential for the government and relevant stakeholders to prioritise initiatives aimed at improving food security, enhancing agricultural practices, and supporting vulnerable populations. By addressing the underlying factors contributing to hunger, Iraq can work towards achieving better outcomes in future assessments and improving the overall well-being of its citizens.
