In a significant step towards strengthening bilateral relations and addressing global environmental challenges, Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani met today with the United Kingdom’s Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, Mr. David Lammy, at the Prime Minister’s residence in London.
The high-level discussions revolved around expanding cooperation across various sectors and bolstering ties between the two nations. This meeting, part of a broader diplomatic initiative, signals the dawn of a new era in Iraq-UK relations, promising a comprehensive partnership with mutual benefits. Regional and international matters, including stability in the Middle East, were also on the agenda, with both leaders emphasising the importance of collective efforts to ensure security and stability worldwide.
A pivotal outcome of the meeting was the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation on climate change, environmental protection, and carbon economics. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Fuad Hussein signed on behalf of Iraq, while Secretary of State Mr. David Lammy represented the United Kingdom. The agreement highlights a mutual dedication to addressing critical environmental issues and advancing sustainable development.
The memorandum lays out a detailed five-year roadmap aimed at transforming Iraq’s energy landscape and reducing its environmental footprint. Key elements of the agreement include: Ending Gas Flaring, Energy Efficiency, Renewable Energy Integration, Workforce Development and Carbon Market Development
The memorandum also seeks to create a framework for broader cooperation on climate and environmental initiatives, facilitating technology transfers, investment opportunities, and joint ventures in clean energy projects.
