The historic Aqargouf Ziggurat is set to be revitalised as part of Baghdad’s preparations to serve as the Arab Tourism Capital in 2025. Following the recommendations of the Baghdad Capital of Arab Tourism Committee, established under Diwani Order No. 24638, a series of cultural initiatives have been launched to enhance this landmark.
A dedicated team has been appointed to oversee the project, led by Counsellor Dr. Omar Al-Alawi, and supported by key figures such as Mr. Mohammed Al-Bayati (Director General of Maintenance), officials from the Abu Ghraib and Mansour Municipalities, Colonel Abbas Hamid from Baghdad Operations, Mr. Ali Abdul Rahman (Director of Karkh Electricity Distribution), and Mr. Ziad Abdul Jabbar from the Prime Minister’s Office.
Their responsibilities include supervising the maintenance and rehabilitation of the Aqargouf Ziggurat and the main roads leading to it. During the team’s initial meeting, plans were outlined to prioritise road enhancements, create visitor rest areas, and provide ongoing support to this iconic archaeological site. These efforts aim to transform the ziggurat into a focal point of pride and cultural heritage, making it a standout venue for Baghdad’s cultural celebrations as the Arab Tourism Capital in 2025.
