The “Confronting Hate Speech and Rebuilding Trust in Iraqi Society” conference, held under the patronage of the Prime Minister and overseen by the Minister of Culture, Tourism, and Antiquities, Dr. Ahmed Fakak Al-Badrani, focused on the importance of cultural and social dialogue in combating hate speech. This annual event, organized by the Conference Palace Department, brought together a diverse group of Iraqi leaders, religious representatives, academics, and officials.
The conference highlighted the critical role of cultural institutions in fostering inclusivity and respect for Iraq’s diverse social fabric. Dr. Montaser Al-Hasnawi, in his opening remarks, stressed the need for collective efforts from religious, media, and community leaders to confront hate speech. He pointed out that while the digital age has brought numerous benefits, it also increases the risk of hate speech.
Discussions extended beyond media and politics, with Dr. Jassim Al-Falahi addressing the impact of climate change on social stability. This underscores the intertwined nature of cultural, environmental, and social challenges. Dr. Saad Salloum emphasized the importance of legal frameworks to combat hate speech, underscoring Iraq’s commitment to pluralism and the protection of its diverse heritage. The event’s focus on tolerance, coexistence, and national identity was a reminder of Iraq’s rich cultural diversity and its path toward a more unified society.
