Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs and Minister of Oil, Mr. Hayan Abdul-Ghani Al-Sawad, chaired the ninth session of the Ministerial Council for Energy today. In the meeting, attended by ministers and advisors, Mr. Abdul-Ghani emphasized the government’s commitment to advancing Iraq’s energy sector, aiming to bolster industrial and economic development nationwide.
The session’s agenda addressed 11 key items related to the Ministry of Oil and Ministry of Electricity, with discussions culminating in six decisions. These resolutions will be submitted to the Council of Ministers for further approval, demonstrating the government’s drive for coordinated, impactful initiatives in the energy sector.
Among the top priorities discussed was the development of the Diwaniyah refinery. With a planned capacity of 70,000 barrels per day, this project is expected to significantly enhance Iraq’s refining capabilities for petroleum products. Mr. Abdul-Ghani highlighted that the Diwaniyah refinery project will not only strengthen the local economy but also provide essential fuel to power generation stations, thus supporting Iraq’s energy security and infrastructure.
The meeting concluded with a renewed focus on strategic planning for energy production and distribution, reflecting the Iraqi government’s vision for a robust, sustainable energy sector.
