Ambassador Dr. Hisham Al-Alawi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Political Planning, and Mr. Michael Mulnix, President of the American University of Baghdad, held significant discussions to strengthen ties between Iraq’s diplomatic services and the university. The meeting focused on enhancing Iraq’s diplomatic workforce through collaboration on academic and professional training initiatives.
During the discussions, Dr. Al-Alawi proposed several initiatives to further develop the skills of Iraq’s future diplomats, including specialised courses to improve English language proficiency and training in the languages of the United Nations. These courses, designed for graduates of the Foreign Service Institute, are part of a broader plan to equip Iraq’s diplomatic staff with essential skills to navigate international relations effectively.
The meeting also explored the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ ambitious plan to establish a political research and studies center, which would be a first in Iraq’s history. Dr. Al-Alawi emphasised the importance of partnering with academic institutions like the American University of Baghdad, known for its strong research capabilities, to provide the expertise and support necessary for the success of this project.
Additionally, both parties discussed the potential for organising workshops and training sessions tailored to Iraq’s advanced diplomatic cadres. These sessions would cover a range of topics relevant to contemporary diplomatic practice, ensuring Iraq’s diplomats are well-prepared for future challenges.
The dialogue also highlighted the importance of expanding cooperation to address global issues such as climate change and artificial intelligence: critical areas that require urgent attention and informed policymaking. The university’s expertise in these fields, combined with the Ministry’s diplomatic focus, is expected to lead to productive collaboration on these priority issues.
This meeting highlighted the potential for greater collaboration between academia and diplomacy, offering a pathway to enhance Iraq’s international presence and foster deeper connections with global partners.
