Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Fuad Hussein, received the French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Jean-Noël Barrot, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters in Baghdad on Wednesday.

The meeting focused on enhancing bilateral relations across various sectors and saw both sides exchange views on pressing regional and international matters of mutual concern. Minister Hussein highlighted the span of opportunities for collaboration at multiple levels, stressing the importance of sustained dialogue and coordination between the two nations.

Minister Barrot, for his part, underlined the significance of the visit, especially in light of Iraq’s upcoming presidency of the Arab League summit. He noted that this leadership role would be complemented by a series of high-level visits to the region, further reinforcing diplomatic engagement.

A key point of discussion was the upcoming third Baghdad Conference, which Minister Hussein described as pivotal. He reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to its successful convening, while also noting France’s deep interest in both its leadership role and in the substance of the conference, which centres on regional stability and collective security.

Both ministers expressed their shared conviction regarding the importance of the Baghdad Summit in addressing vital issues, particularly the security of Iraq and the broader region. They also emphasised the need for enhanced international cooperation to promote stability.

The discussion also touched upon economic cooperation. Minister Barrot expressed satisfaction with the presence of French firms operating in Iraq, and voiced optimism that an improved investment climate would attract further French business activity in the country.

The meeting reaffirmed both nations’ dedication to strengthening strategic ties and working collaboratively to address regional challenges in pursuit of peace and prosperity.
