The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Multilateral Affairs and Legal Affairs, Ambassador Shorsh Khaled Saeed, chaired a virtual meeting aimed at advancing Iraq’s candidacy for membership in the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) for the 2026-2028 term. The meeting brought together heads of political and multilateral departments at the ministry’s headquarters, along with Iraqi diplomatic mission chiefs worldwide, to strategise on mobilising international support.
Discussions focused on enhancing Iraq’s prospects of securing a seat on the Council by showcasing the country’s progress in human rights and underlining the significance of its potential membership on the global stage. Participants also reviewed Iraq’s commitments and objectives for the HRC term, should its candidacy be successful.
In his concluding remarks, Ambassador Saeed underscored the need to intensify diplomatic engagement to ensure Iraq’s success in the upcoming elections. He highlighted the crucial role of Iraqi diplomatic missions in securing endorsements from member states, reinforcing Iraq’s commitment to human rights and international cooperation.
