Iraq joins the international community in marking World Art Day, a celebration held annually on April 15th, to promote the development, diffusion and enjoyment of art in all its forms.
Designated by UNESCO, World Art Day serves as a global reminder of the vital role that art plays in enriching cultural diversity, inspiring creativity and fostering dialogue across communities and borders. From ancient Mesopotamian carvings to contemporary installations, Iraq’s rich artistic heritage remains a powerful testament to the enduring connection between creativity and identity.
In a statement shared by the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), UN Secretary-General António Guterres highlighted the unifying power of art in an increasingly divided world.
“Art is one of the most powerful ways we can express our humanity and forge bonds with one another,” he said. “This World Art Day, let us remember how art can unite and connect us even in times of crisis and difficulty.”
In Iraq, artists, institutions and cultural organisations are increasingly using creative expression to engage with young people, preserve national heritage, and strengthen community ties. Whether through music, painting, sculpture, film or digital media, artistic practices offer a meaningful space for reflection, resilience and hope.
This year’s World Art Day comes as Iraq continues to rebuild and invest in cultural infrastructure, with growing support for local artists and initiatives that aim to bring art into public spaces, classrooms and policy-making. Cultural festivals, gallery exhibitions, and community art programmes are helping to revitalise both traditional and contemporary art scenes across the country.
On this day, Iraq stands in solidarity with artists and art lovers around the world in celebrating the transformative power of creativity and the essential role of the arts in building more peaceful, connected, and culturally rich societies.
