A new tree planting campaign has been launched in Iraq to support environmental sustainability and combat climate change. The initiative is part of the National Sustainable Development Initiative, which aims to reduce emissions, improve air quality, and enhance green spaces across the country. It also aligns with the national plan to plant five million trees and palm trees, helping to create a healthier and more sustainable environment for future generations.
The campaign kicked off with the planting of 100 seedlings in the gardens of the Ministry of Culture’s headquarters, in collaboration with the ISO National Energy Team and the Climate Change Committee. This effort represents a collective push towards reforestation, biodiversity conservation, and the expansion of urban greenery to mitigate the effects of rising temperatures and desertification.
According to Engineer Mohammed Jassim Mohammed, a member of the climate teams involved, the campaign is a voluntary and humanitarian effort that will extend tree-planting initiatives across multiple sectors. By encouraging public and institutional participation, this initiative highlights the growing recognition of trees as a vital tool in addressing environmental challenges, absorbing carbon dioxide, preventing soil erosion, and providing shade and cooling effects in urban areas.
With continued efforts to plant and maintain trees, Iraq is taking an important step towards greener, healthier cities and a more resilient environment for future generations.
