Iraq Pushes for Regional Water and Climate Dialogue

Ambassador Dr. Hisham Al-Alawi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Political Planning, chaired a high-level meeting to discuss the “Water and Climate Dialogue for Regional Prosperity and Peacebuilding” initiative. The initiative, launched in cooperation with the Geneva Water Hub, aims to enhance regional cooperation on water security and climate resilience.

The meeting brought together key government officials, including Dr. Mohammad Amin Fares, Advisor to the President and Chairman of the Executive Council of the Blue Peace Initiative, and Dr. Sadiq Jawad, Advisor to the Prime Minister. Representatives from the National Security Advisory, the Ministries of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Environment, as well as various departments within the Foreign Ministry, were also in attendance.

Dr. Al-Alawi reviewed the action plan submitted by the Swiss side and shared insights from his recent discussions with representatives of the Geneva Water Center and the Swiss Peace Foundation. Participants exchanged perspectives on the proposed initiative, highlighting the importance of regional cooperation in addressing water and climate challenges.

Emphasising the role of water and climate diplomacy in fostering regional stability, Dr. Al-Alawi underscored the need for Iraq and its neighbours to establish a cooperative platform to strengthen peace and sustainable development.

This initiative reflects Iraq’s growing commitment to integrating water security into its diplomatic efforts, recognising its impact on economic growth, environmental sustainability, and long-term regional stability.
