The Iraqi Ministry of Environment and the United Nations have discussed the formation of the Environment and Climate Change Advisory Group, a new initiative aimed at tackling Iraq’s pressing environmental challenges, including air pollution in major cities. The group will serve as a platform for coordinating national and international efforts, setting environmental priorities, and strengthening global partnerships.
The discussions took place during a meeting between Dr. Hallo Al-Askari, Iraq’s Minister of Environment, and Ghulam Isaczai, Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Iraq. Representatives from key UN agencies, including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the World Food Programme (WFP), as well as the World Bank and senior officials from the Ministry of Environment, also participated.
The Advisory Group will bring together national and international experts, academics from Iraqi universities and research institutes, youth representatives, and officials from the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of Environment. It will also engage stakeholders from both the public and private sectors to develop strategies that address Iraq’s environmental concerns and drive sustainable solutions.
This initiative reflects Iraq’s commitment to advancing environmental policies and strengthening collaboration with global partners to combat climate change and improve environmental sustainability.
