The Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq for Political Affairs and Electoral Assistance, Mr. Claudio Cordone, attended the “Iraqi Women and Civil Society Forum: Leadership and Influence: A Future towards Sustainability and Innovation” in Baghdad on March 15th.
The event, organised by the Kahramana Organization for women empowerment, was hosted by Ms. Sara Ayad Allawi, Adviser on civil society organisations to His Excellency Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani. Also in attendance was former Prime Minister Mr. Ayad Allawi, alongside civil society representatives and advocates for women’s rights in Iraq.
In his address, DSRSG Cordone emphasised the significance of such gatherings, stating, “Your voices as civil society representatives and initiatives such as this forum are of critical importance.” He reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to supporting civil society organisations in their efforts to protect and promote women’s rights and strengthen their role in public life.
Recognising the progress achieved by women in Iraq, Mr. Cordone acknowledged both the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. He highlighted the need for continued efforts to ensure equal rights and participation for women in all aspects of public life, reaffirming the UN’s dedication to fostering inclusivity.
“I believe and we all agree that everyone will gain from promoting women’s rights and their political participation in Iraq, as the country continues to build its own path towards a more inclusive, stronger society,” he stated.
The forum provided a platform for discussions on advancing gender equality, strengthening women’s leadership, and fostering innovation for a sustainable future. Participants exchanged perspectives on policy reforms, grassroots activism, and strategies to enhance women’s representation in decision-making processes.
As Iraq continues its efforts towards social and economic development, forums such as this serve as crucial spaces for dialogue and collaboration, ensuring that women’s voices remain at the forefront of shaping the country’s future.
