In a bid to enhance its services and increase capacity, Iraqi Airways has announced plans to expand its fleet with the addition of 9 new aircraft by the end of 2025.
Iraqi Airways currently operates a diverse fleet of 37 aircraft, comprising a mix of modern Airbus and Boeing models. The fleet includes:
- 20 Airbus A220 aircraft
- 2 Airbus A320 aircraft
- 1 Airbus A321 aircraft
- 6 Boeing 737 aircraft
- 2 Dreamliner aircraft
The airline’s growth coincides with improvements in Iraq’s civilian aviation infrastructure. The country boasts eight civilian airports, of which six are operational:
- Baghdad International Airport – Opened in 1980.
- Basra International Airport – Built in the 1960s and returned to service in 2005 after years of sanctions.
- Najaf International Airport – Opened in 2008.
- Sulaymaniyah International Airport – Began operations in 2005.
- Erbil International Airport – Started receiving civilian flights in 2005.
- Kirkuk International Airport – Opened its doors on October 16, 2022.
Additionally, several airports are currently under construction, including Duhok International Airport, Mosul Airport, Karbala International Airport, and Nasiriyah International Airport, reflecting the government’s commitment to enhancing the country’s aviation capabilities.
On the international front, the Iraqi government is actively engaged in discussions with European officials to resume Iraqi flights in European airspace, signalling a positive step towards revitalising connections with international destinations.
As Iraqi Airways and the country’s airport infrastructure continue to grow, Iraq is poised to strengthen its position in the regional aviation market, enhancing connectivity and fostering economic growth.
