Iraqi Authority Pushes for Baghdad as Arab Tourism Capital for 2025

The Iraqi Tourism Authority, in a continued effort to position Baghdad as a global tourist destination, met with prominent diplomats in Cairo to gain support for the city’s nomination as the Arab Tourism Capital for 2025.

Mr. Ali Yassin Abdul Raza, Director of the International Relations Department at the Iraqi Tourism Authority, held a significant meeting with Iraq’s Ambassador to Egypt, Dr. Qahtan Al-Janabi, as well as Dr. Jawad Al-Hindawi, Ambassador of the Arab League to the European Union, and Dr. Hassan Al-Hindawi, Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League. The meeting, which took place in Cairo, focused on rallying Arab support for Baghdad’s candidacy.

This strategic effort is part of Iraq’s broader initiative to highlight Baghdad’s rich civilisational, archaeological, and cultural heritage on the global stage. The nomination of Baghdad as the Arab Tourism Capital would not only boost Iraq’s tourism sector but also reinforce the country’s image as a secure and stable destination for international travellers.

During the meeting, participants agreed to develop a roadmap to strengthen Baghdad’s candidacy. This will involve coordinating efforts and facilitating projects that highlight the city’s unique tourism appeal. Mr. Abdul Raza presented the progress made in preparing Baghdad’s nomination file, which was well-received by the diplomats. They praised the comprehensive information included in the file, emphasising the importance of showcasing Iraq’s tourism potential in international forums.

The Arab League’s Department of Transport and Tourism had requested the preparation of this nomination, recognising Baghdad’s immense historical and cultural value. A detailed presentation of the file will be made by Mr. Ali Yassin to representatives of the Arab League, with further updates to be shared with Arab ambassadors in Cairo through the Iraqi Embassy.

Baghdad’s nomination for the prestigious title underscores Iraq’s ambitions to reclaim its position as a key player in the global tourism industry.
