Iraqi Youth Weightlifting Events Highlight Emerging Talent

The National Center for the Care of Sports Talent for Weightlifting recently organised a series of activation tournaments for young athletes, aged 10-14, in Baghdad and various governorates. These events were part of a broader sports festival aimed at fostering interaction among players and evaluating their technical skills and training progress.

The first tournament was hosted at Badra Club and included participants from the Baghdad Talent Center and surrounding central regions. The event, supported by the National Center and the Creativity Foundation, featured teams from Baghdad, Badra, Kut, and Al-Khalis Club, with 40 athletes showcasing their capabilities.

The second tournament was held at the Basra Talent Center, in partnership with the Mina Club. This competition drew attention from notable figures in the sport, including athletes and faculty members from the College of Physical Education Sciences, underscoring its significance for the weightlifting community.

The Director of the National Center for Weightlifting highlighted that the objective of these activation tournaments was to assess the athletes’ development after a year of intensive training at talent centers certified by the Supreme Committee of the Ministry of Youth and Sports. He noted that these events were conducted as open, voluntary initiatives, demonstrating the Center’s commitment to nurturing emerging talent and strengthening the sport at the grassroots level.
