Iraq’s Commitment to Financial Stability at UNCTAD Debt Conference

Iraq’s Minister of Finance, Taif Sami, took part in the 14th International Debt Management Conference, organised by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva.

The three-day event, held from March 17th to 19th, served as a key platform for discussing global financial policies and debt management strategies. During the conference, Minister Sami reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to implementing key recommendations aimed at enhancing financial and economic performance. She emphasised that sound debt management policies are crucial for ensuring Iraq’s economic stability and sustainable development.

On the sidelines of the event, Sami held discussions with Ms. Rebecca Krinspan, Secretary-General of UNCTAD, focusing on strengthening cooperation in debt management and sustainable financial policies. The Minister highlighted Iraq’s interest in benefiting from UNCTAD’s technical expertise to improve its financial strategies.

Additionally, Sami met with Mr. Paolo Gentiloni, former Managing Director for Economic Affairs at the organisation, to discuss economic challenges and the need for flexible fiscal policies. She stressed Iraq’s commitment to adopting international best practices in public debt management, particularly by learning from European financial models.
