Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani arrived at Al-Faw Grand Port in Basra Province to oversee the handover ceremony of five berths completed by a Korean company, marking a milestone in Iraq’s strategic port development. According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Media Office, the handover signifies the completion of essential infrastructure in the port’s first phase, with the entire phase expected to be finished by next year.
During the ceremony, Al-Sudani highlighted the project’s role in establishing Iraq as a key player in global trade routes. Al-Faw Grand Port, designed to accommodate massive commercial vessels with deep drafts, is set to transform Iraq from a country reliant on the ports of neighboring nations into a significant maritime presence in the Gulf.
Al-Sudani emphasized that Al-Faw Grand Port and the Development Road, originating from the port, represent Iraq’s vision for economic transformation. The port is expected to act as a hub for international commerce, linking regional economies and facilitating broader trade networks.
The Iraqi government has also supported plans to upgrade railways along the Development Road and introduce new rail projects, aiming to increase non-oil revenue through industrial development and enhanced trade.
