The Deputy Minister of Culture, Tourism and Antiquities for Cultural Affairs, Professor Dr Fadel Mohammed Al-Badrani, welcomed a delegation from the United Nations Mission in Iraq to discuss collaboration on cultural and heritage initiatives.
The delegation included Mr Mohammed Abdul Razzaq, Political Affairs Officer in the Office of the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, and Ms Rasika Regal, Director of Capacity Building and Personnel. The meeting was attended by several key figures from the Ministry, including Dr Iyad Kazem, Director General of the Heritage Department; Dr Ismail Suleiman Hassan, Director General of the Children’s Culture House; Dr Abdul Qader Al-Jumaili; Mr Mohammed Jassim, Director of the Cultural Deputy’s Office; and Ms Shaima Mahmoud, Director of Intangible Heritage Protection and Preservation.
During the discussions, both parties explored the establishment of an intensive training programme aimed at UN mission staff in Iraq. The initiative seeks to enhance their understanding of Iraqi heritage, culture, and civilisation, while also providing insight into tourism, music, and fine arts. The programme will include field visits to significant cultural, archaeological, and tourist sites across the country.
Furthermore, it was agreed that the Ministry would participate in a special cultural event organised by the UN Mission through the renowned Sumerian Troupe. This performance will feature traditional Iraqi artistic and musical presentations, contributing to the promotion of Iraq’s rich cultural heritage. The event forms part of the wider efforts in support of Baghdad: Arab Tourism Capital 2025.
