The city of Mosul has unveiled plans for one of the largest artistic endeavours in Iraq, featuring the carving of a monumental Assyrian mural. Written in ancient cuneiform script, the mural will span over 5,000 square metres and is situated in the cultural complex on the eastern side of Mosul.
The project is under the supervision of renowned artist Omar Al-Khafaaf, who described it as “one of the largest artistic works in Iraq and the Middle East, as the mural represents the largest Assyrian panel in the region, bringing to life the history of Mosul during its Assyrian era.” He emphasised that the mural is not merely an artistic display but a living historical record that speaks the language of a bygone era.
The choice of reinforced concrete as the primary material reflects the strength and durability of the Assyrian civilisation. Upon completion, the mural is expected to be displayed in the Iraqi National Museum in Baghdad. It will join a collection of artefacts from Nineveh and other discoveries, shining a spotlight on Assyrian civilisation and its artistic heritage.
This project represents a significant cultural milestone for Mosul, celebrating the city’s rich history and enduring legacy.
