In a strategic move to boost Iraq’s refining capabilities, the Ministry of Oil has announced the addition of a new refining unit at the Maysan Refinery, increasing its capacity by 70,000 barrels per day (bpd). This expansion is expected to play a significant role in enhancing the country’s domestic fuel production and meeting the growing demand for petroleum products.
The new unit will primarily process crude oil into essential petroleum products like gasoline, diesel, and kerosene. This development aligns with Iraq’s strategy to improve its energy security and reduce fuel shortages, which have at times disrupted supply chains.
“The addition of this unit is a key milestone in our efforts to refine more of Iraq’s oil domestically,” said Iraq’s Oil Minister. “It will help us meet the local demand for petroleum products and reduce the need for imports.”
The expansion of the Maysan Refinery is expected to benefit Iraq’s economy by increasing the supply of refined oil products, thus reducing the country’s reliance on imported fuels. This will not only help Iraq retain more revenue from oil exports but also contribute to its broader economic recovery and diversification efforts.
This development at the Maysan Refinery is part of a broader strategy to modernise Iraq’s oil infrastructure. The country is exploring further investments in refining technologies and expanding other refineries across the nation. These efforts are integral to ensuring the sustainability of Iraq’s oil sector and supporting the nation’s economic growth.
As Iraq continues to address challenges related to refining capacity and energy demand, the expansion at Maysan is seen as a crucial step towards securing the country’s energy future.
