The second edition of the Iraqi-Iranian Science Week commenced in Karbala, drawing participation from over 100 universities across Iraq and Iran. This significant event was marked by the presence of prominent figures, including the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Naeem Al-Aboudi, members of the Parliamentary Education Committee, the Governor of Karbala, university presidents, and cultural advisors.
Dr. Al-Aboudi highlighted Iraq’s achievements in internationalising education and advancing sustainable development. He pointed out that Iraq’s higher education institutions have made remarkable progress in global rankings through increased focus on scientific research and a growing presence in international publications. This emphasis on quality education has enabled Iraqi universities to attain international accreditation, ensuring the robustness of academic programmes and qualifications.
The Science Week is a platform for fostering collaboration between Iraqi and Iranian universities. It includes the exchange of scientists, professors, and researchers, as well as the implementation of joint research and technological projects. Other initiatives encompass cultural exchange, scholarships, specialised workshops, technical cooperation, and the establishment of joint science and technology parks.
Dr. Hossein Simaei Saraf, the Iranian Minister of Science, Research and Technology, commended the successful organisation of the event and emphasised the importance of strengthening scientific ties between the two nations to enhance their global standing.
The highlight of the event was the signing of an executive programme between the Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and its Iranian counterpart. The agreement focuses on:
- Enhancing cooperation in scholarship programmes for undergraduate and postgraduate studies, particularly within the “Study in Iraq” initiative.
- Organising training workshops for teachers and students.
- Promoting joint scientific supervision.
- Facilitating the exchange of university professors for joint research and lectures.
- Establishing a joint scientific park in Iraq, managed by the Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education.
The launch event also featured official speeches, scientific presentations, and the recognition of distinguished individuals for their contributions.
