New Iraqi-Korean Hospitals to Boost Medical Services

Minister of Health Dr. Saleh Mahdi Al-Hasnawi welcomed Korean Ambassador Mr. Jo Sung-soo and a delegation from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) at the Ministry’s headquarters on October 29, 2024. The meeting included the Ministry’s Technical Undersecretary and several general managers, reflecting the importance of the longstanding Iraqi-Korean partnership in healthcare.

Key topics included the progress of two significant joint healthcare projects aimed at enhancing medical care capacity in Iraq. These are the Iraqi-Korean Intensive Care Hospital, a 74-bed facility soon to open in the City of Medicine, and the Iraqi-Korean Center for the Treatment and Research of Heart Diseases, a 63-bed specialty centre in Dhi Qar Governorate. Both facilities represent milestones in addressing critical healthcare needs and providing advanced treatment and research capabilities.

Dr. Al-Hasnawi highlighted the need to expedite project requirements, with an emphasis on learning from South Korea’s healthcare development model. This partnership shows a commitment to elevating Iraq’s health infrastructure and ensuring accessible, high-quality services. The projects, supported by KOICA’s expertise, aim to contribute to Iraq’s overall healthcare improvement strategy and establish frameworks for future bilateral initiatives, reinforcing Iraq and South Korea’s shared goal of advancing public health for their citizens.
