The Ministry of Planning recently conducted a field visit to monitor the progress of the Diwaniyah Sewerage Project – Phase II. This vital project is designed to provide comprehensive sewage and rainwater treatment services to nearly 500,000 people living in Diwaniyah District, which includes 55 neighborhoods. With a completion rate of approximately 83%, the project is on track to be finished by early 2026.
The Diwaniyah Sewerage Project aims to treat both sewage and rainwater, converting it into water suitable for restricted agricultural use and fertiliser production. The infrastructure includes over 160 km of rainwater networks and 350 km of sewage networks across residential areas, as well as a dedicated line for conveying both sewage and rainwater.
Once completed, the project will significantly improve the environmental and service conditions in Diwaniyah, helping to reduce pollution and lay the foundation for better infrastructure in the governorate. The project will directly benefit the population by providing cleaner water for irrigation and agriculture, while also enhancing public health and sanitation.
However, the project has faced some challenges, including conflicts with existing railway lines, electrical cables, and expressways, which have delayed progress. The Ministry of Planning has urged the relevant authorities to resolve these issues promptly to ensure the project’s timely completion.
