The Baghdad Secretariat has officially commenced the first phase of the Sustainable Baghdad Forests project, set to become Iraq’s largest urban forest. Spanning 12 million square metres on the site of Al-Rasheed Camp, the ambitious initiative will feature over one million trees, transforming the area into a vast green space.
According to the Secretariat, work has begun on debris removal and soil replacement, paving the way for the creation of green hills, waterfalls, and waterways designed to replicate natural landscapes. The project aims to serve as a new ecological hub and a major tourist attraction for Baghdad residents.
This initiative marks a significant step in Iraq’s sustainable development efforts, with the government steadfast in its decision to convert the Rashid Camp site into a green zone rather than a residential project. The transformation aligns with national efforts to combat climate change, reduce pollution, and enhance urban greenery.
The Sustainable Baghdad Forests will host 28 themed forests, including the Culture and Arts Forest, Children and Leisure Forest, Ladies’ Forest, Technology and Innovation Forest, and Sports and Fitness Forest. It will also feature a National Wing, a World Forest Village, and a massive artificial lake spanning 1.5 million square metres, connected by water channels. Additionally, the project will include recreational and cultural facilities such as a theatre, museum, cinema, and sports complexes.
This groundbreaking initiative is set to redefine Baghdad’s environmental landscape, offering a breath of fresh air to the capital while promoting sustainability and urban biodiversity.
