New Women’s Protection Centre Opens in Diwaniyah

In a powerful stride towards safeguarding women’s rights and dignity, a new Women’s Protection Centre has officially opened today in Diwaniyah. Backed by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and generously funded by the Government of France, the centre represents a collaborative effort with local authorities and the Iraqi Women’s Department under the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers.

The centre will offer a vital lifeline for women and girls affected by violence, providing a secure space where survivors can access psychosocial support, legal aid, and reintegration services. More than just a shelter, it aims to be a sanctuary for recovery and a springboard for new beginnings.

French Ambassador to Iraq, Patrick Durrell, emphasised the importance of the initiative:
“Combating violence against women is a priority. I am pleased and proud that France is supporting this project alongside the United Nations. This shelter will provide a safe space where survivors can begin to rebuild their lives, and finally think about the future with hope and clarity.”

Ms Hind Jalal, UNFPA Representative in Iraq, echoed this sentiment, stating:
“This centre stands as a testament to our shared commitment to ensuring that every woman and girl in Diwaniyah, and across Iraq, lives free from fear and violence. We are grateful to our partners in the Government of France and the local authorities of Diwaniyah for their continued support of this essential vision.”

The opening of the Diwaniyah centre forms part of a broader effort by UNFPA to enhance protection services throughout Iraq. Similar centres have already been rehabilitated in Ninewa, Kirkuk, and Anbar, each reflecting a growing network of safety and support for survivors across the country.

UNFPA has reaffirmed its dedication to working with Iraqi institutions to strengthen legal frameworks and ensure the sustainability of these protection spaces. By addressing both the immediate and structural needs of survivors, the initiative aims to create lasting change.
