Nigeria to Reopen Embassy in Baghdad by Early 2025

On November 27, 2024, Dr. Ghazi Eltobi, Head of the Africa Department at Iraq’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, met with a high-level delegation from the Federal Republic of Nigeria led by Ambassador Murtala Jimoh. The visit focused on the procedural steps required to reopen the Nigerian Embassy in Baghdad, marking a significant development in the diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Dr. Eltobi warmly welcomed the Nigerian delegation and reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to facilitating the mission. He emphasised the Ministry’s readiness to provide all necessary support to ensure the successful reopening of the embassy, which is planned for the first quarter of 2025.

The meeting also covered discussions on strengthening bilateral relations in various fields, including economic, cultural, and political cooperation. Both sides expressed their intention to activate existing agreements and to boost collaboration through the exchange of high-level visits. This renewed focus on diplomacy signals a fresh chapter in Iraq-Nigeria relations, underpinned by mutual interests and the desire for stronger ties.
