Prime Minister Al-Sudani Highlights Women’s Role in Healthcare

Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani met with a group of Iraqi female doctors, praising their contributions to the healthcare sector and reaffirming the government’s commitment to prioritising women’s role in society.

The Prime Minister commended female medical professionals as essential to Iraq’s healthcare system and highlighted their pivotal role during critical moments in the country’s history. He stressed that the government’s focus on women’s participation is not merely symbolic but a core responsibility.

Key points from the meeting included:

• Healthcare Development: Three new hospitals in Baghdad will open this year, with efforts ongoing to complete other delayed projects and inaugurate additional hospitals nationwide.
• Specialised Centres: Dedicated budgets have been allocated to ensure their effective operation.
• Leadership Roles for Women: Female doctors are encouraged to take on senior positions within the Ministry of Health, reflecting their proven competence.
• Pharmaceutical Industry Growth: Local pharmaceutical production is expanding, with contracts for domestic manufacturers increasing from 10% to 35%, promoting domestic manufacturing and expanding production capabilities.
• Health Insurance Law: A critical step to improve access to medical services for all citizens, supported by significant funding.

Al-Sudani emphasised that strengthening healthcare services is essential to improving relations between citizens and the state, reiterating the government’s commitment to serving the public and advancing Iraq’s healthcare infrastructure.

The Prime Minister also underlined the importance of collaboration between medical professionals and policymakers to ensure healthcare strategies are practical and effective. This forms part of a broader government effort to promote women’s leadership and enhance public trust in state institutions.
