The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) Human Rights Office, in collaboration with Samraa Organisation – a prominent Iraqi NGO advocating for the rights of Iraqis of African descent – recently convened a workshop focused on the rights of religious and ethnic minorities.
The workshop examined the recommendations put forward by the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination during its periodic review of Iraq conducted in August this year. Discussions highlighted the challenges faced by minority groups and the importance of implementing the Committee’s recommendations to combat racial discrimination and promote inclusivity.
Participants explored practical steps for fostering collaboration among component groups, ensuring that efforts to address discrimination involve all segments of society. The group proposed measures to advance inclusivity and enhance the protection of minority rights, aiming to build a more equitable and cohesive society.
The event highlighted the role of local organisations such as Samraa in advocating for marginalised groups and promoting dialogue among Iraq’s diverse communities. The outcomes of the workshop are expected to contribute to the broader efforts of the Iraqi government and international stakeholders in strengthening the rights and representation of religious and ethnic minorities.
