Restoration of Zumurrud Khatun Shrine: A Timely Preservation of Baghdadi Heritage

The ancient shrine of Zumurrud Khatun is currently undergoing reconstruction, directed by the Minister of Culture, Tourism, and Antiquities, Dr. Ahmed Fakak Al-Badrani. Architectural and engineering experts have begun the initial phase of the refurbishment, with completion anticipated within 40 days.

The project is overseen by the commission’s head, Mr. Ali Obaid Shalgam. The restoration involves addressing the carved decorations, repairing cracks, and maintaining the walls and dome. It also includes reinforcing the shrine’s foundation using modern scientific methods, in accordance with UNESCO’s preservation guidelines. The work will also incorporate traditional-style corridors, flooring, and lighting.

Recognised as a significant piece of Baghdadi architecture, Al-Badrani is committed to ensuring the restoration is completed meticulously and on schedule.
