Switzerland Reopens Embassy in Iraq

Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani met with Mr. Daniel Hunn, the newly appointed Swiss Ambassador to Iraq, in a significant moment marking the reopening of Switzerland’s embassy in Baghdad after a 33-year closure.

Prime Minister Al-Sudani welcomed the embassy’s reopening, describing it as an important step towards enhancing diplomatic and economic ties between Iraq and Switzerland. He emphasised the need for activating joint working committees to strengthen fruitful cooperation across various sectors, particularly in the areas of trade and investment. The Prime Minister reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to fostering a business-friendly environment that supports the growth of international partnerships.

Ambassador Hunn expressed his enthusiasm for this new phase in bilateral relations, stating, “Iraq is an important partner country for Switzerland in the Middle East region. Against this background, my colleagues and I at the Embassy of Switzerland are committed to developing and intensifying the bilateral relations between our two nations and peoples.”

He further emphasised that the Swiss Embassy would be the primary contact point for Swiss activities in Iraq, ready to support initiatives across political, economic, and cultural fields. While consular and visa matters will continue to be handled by the Swiss Embassy in Amman, Jordan, Ambassador Hunn encouraged engagement, assuring Iraqis that the embassy team is ready to assist in any way possible.
