Travel Smarter with Iraq’s New Electronic Passport

Iraqi citizens will now be able to travel with more ease with the introduction of the country’s new e-passport. This improved document has been enhanced security features and streamlined processes, making international travel more secure and efficient.

The e-passport has a microchip storing the holder’s biometric data, including fingerprints and a digital photo. This additional layer of security allows for more accurate identity verification, minimising fake duplicates.

Holograms, watermarks, and other advanced anti-counterfeiting measures are also integrated into the e-passport design, further deterring fraud attempts. Additionally, the document adheres to International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, ensuring seamless travel and compatibility with automated border control systems around the world.

Obtaining an e-passport is straightforward. Applicants simply need to submit their biometric data and personal information, which is then securely encoded onto the passport’s microchip. The validity period remains consistent with traditional passports (typically 5 or 10 years), with renewal procedures involving updated biometrics for continued security.

A welcome advantage of the e-passport is the anticipated reduction in processing times at border control. This translates to a smoother and less time-consuming immigration experience for Iraqi travelers.

Issued by the Directorate of Nationality and Civil Status, e-passports can be obtained at designated passport offices within Iraq or at Iraqi consulates and embassies abroad.

The e-passport marks a significant step forward for Iraq, bringing its travel documentation in line with international standards. This modernised approach ensures a more secure and efficient travel experience for Iraqi citizens that wish to abroad.
