UNCTAD Project: Key Customs Changes Expected

On Sunday, July 21, 2024, Minister of Finance Mrs. Taif Sami Muhammad chaired a coordination meeting that could significantly impact the operational efficiency and international trade relations of the General Authority of Customs. This meeting, attended by the Director Generals of the General Authority of Customs, the Legal Department, the Information Technology Department, and several key officials, focused on reviewing and implementing the recommendations of the detailed action plan for the second phase of the UNCTAD project.

The review of these recommendations, included in the letter from the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers’ National Data Center Department, signals a pivotal step towards modernizing customs operations. By aligning with the UNCTAD team from the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development and adhering to the payment terms outlined in the project document, the Customs Administration aims to enhance compliance, streamline processes, and improve border security.

The successful implementation of these recommendations, which have been forwarded to the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers, the Prime Minister’s Office, and the Border Ports Authority, could lead to more efficient customs operations, increased trade facilitation, and strengthened economic growth.
