The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in partnership with the government of Japan and the Al-Diwaniyah Governorate authorities marked a major milestone on the 13th of April. An official inauguration ceremony took place at the Diwaniyah Specialised Maternity Hospital to commemorate the opening of the new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the reconstruction of the maternity ward.

The initiative is part of a Japan-funded project, designed to strengthen reproductive health services and allow for easier access to life-saving care for mothers and newborns in the region.

UNFPA and the Japanese government reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Iraq’s healthcare system through their humanitarian efforts. The core focus of upgrading the hospital’s existing facilities was to improve maternal and child healthcare in Iraq, especially in underprivileged areas.
