Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani held a pivotal meeting with UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell on Sunday, during the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The talks centered on key childhood issues, children’s rights under international law, and the strides Iraq has made in these areas.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Al-Sudani emphasised the importance of cooperation between UNICEF and Iraq’s private sector, particularly in education. He affirmed the readiness of Iraqi educational institutions to collaborate with UNICEF to improve opportunities for children across the country.
Ms. Russell expressed her gratitude for the meeting and welcomed further cooperation between Iraq and UNICEF programs. She praised Iraq’s progress on family and child welfare under the current administration and accepted the Prime Minister’s invitation to visit Iraq in the near future.
The discussions marked another step forward in Iraq’s efforts to prioritise children’s rights and improve educational and social support systems with the help of international partners.
